Caring For Your Dog When He's Ill: What You Can Do

Posted on

Your dog isn't able to just come up to you to tell you he isn't feeling well. You can't just feel his forehead and see that he has a fever. Your dog's symptoms aren't going to be as easy to see and since he can't talk, you may not even notice he isn't feel well for a day or two. If your dog is ill, you should take him to the veterinarian for a checkup to figure out what's going on. Read on for a few other things you can do to make your dog feel better.

1. Keep Him Comfortable

If your dog is wanting to sleep a lot or is feeling lethargic, allow him to rest. Don't force him to go on a walk if he isn't up for it. Keep other pets in your home or in your neighborhood away from your dog if he's not in a playful mood. When dogs aren't feeling well they may not act like themselves and could be more aggressive as a way of protecting themselves. It's best to keep your dog away from other pets until he is feeling better again.

2. Give Him Enough Outside Time

If your dog is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea, he may be wanting to go outside more often than normal. Allow your dog this time so he doesn't have to go in the house. He may try his best to hold it in, but accidents happen. If he's trying to get outside, allow him that time even if he was just outside. He may eat grass to help settle his stomach, allow him to do this too. The same goes for if your dog has a urinary infection. He's going to want to go outside a lot, so allow him to do so.

3. Give Your Dog Rice And Chicken

If your dog is not eating very much, is having trouble keeping his food down, or is having diarrhea, give your dog rice and chicken instead in small amounts. It can help soak up everything inside of him and may help to solidify his stools a bit. Only give him this in small amounts, as too much may end up having a negative effect instead.

If you suspect your dog isn't feeling well, take him to the veterinarian for pet care. Your vet will run the proper tests and figure out what exactly is wrong with your dog so he can be treated properly and feeling like himself again in no time.
