Six Reasons Veterinarians Are Heroes

Posted on

If you have ever had a pet, you know that pets are not just animals—they are a part of your family. Dogs and cats aren't referred to as "fur babies" for no reason! Just like human babies, owners have to be very in tune with their pet since animals can't verbalize what they need. It is up to their humans to ensure that they are taken care of and kept safe and healthy. Pet owners rely on veterinarians to help on the journey of pet ownership.

At first glance, veterinarians have a fun job. They get to play with animals all day! What can be better? You probably know that vets examine animals, administer vaccines, help sick and injured animals, and prescribe medicine. However, there are many other things veterinarians do that make them everyday heroes.

They help lost pets

Veterinarians help prevent lost animals by inserting microchips in them. This teeny-tiny chip has a number on it that is connected to a system that provides information on the pet's owner. When an animal is found and brought to a veterinarian, they are able to scan the chip, find the owner, and reunite them.

They help abandoned pets

Your local veterinarian is likely not an animal shelter, but that doesn't mean that they never see abandoned animals. Since people know that a vet isn't going to do anything to hurt an animal, animals often get dumped at the doorstep. Veterinarians help get abandoned pets to a place that is set up to assist.

Veterinarians save lives

Veterinarians perform surgeries and take other measures that can make the difference between life and death. They are, quite literally, lifesavers.

They put themselves in danger

Animals are unpredictable and can do a lot of damage. Even though veterinarians are very highly trained, there is still a risk that comes with working with unfamiliar animals. A vet risks their own safety on the job daily.

Veterinarians help you through trauma

Saying goodbye to an animal is one of the hardest things you will go through on your journey of pet ownership. The veterinarian sees your pain and works very hard to make goodbyes comfortable and easy. It is hard for them, too, but they are a steady rock for you during your difficult time.

They are still there for your pet, even during a pandemic.

Even now when most other businesses are shut down due to the deadly virus sweeping the nation, veterinarians stay open and risk their own health to be there for your animals.

Veterinarians wear many hats and perform a wide variety of duties.  They are important to society and are definitely everyday heroes.
